U toku današnjeg dana postignut je vidan napredak u naporima da se Spirit izvuče iz peska u koji se zaglibio još marta prošle godine. Američki operativci mesecima nastoje da izvuku ovaj rover pomerajući ga napred-nazad i analizirajući bukvlalno svaki mogući manevar kako bi pronašli spasonosno rešenje.
Marsov rover, Spirit, nasukao se i zaglibio u pesak na Marsu pre osam meseci i tako se našao u beznadežnom, ili gotovo beznadežnom položaju. Od pe nekoliko godina jedan od šest njegovih točkova je blokiran, nedavno je otkazao još jedan, a rover se zaglibio do "stomaka" tako da je naseo na pesak. Uz sve to Spirit ima i problema sa memorijom. Ipak, i pored svega, američki inženjeri koji upravljaju ovim roverom se ne predaju i ulažu krajnji napor i znanje kako bi vozilo oslobodili zamke u koju je upalo. Da problem bude još veći, rover raspolaže sve manjom količinom energije pošto su mu solarni paneli prašnjavi, a Sunce je, zbog dolaska zime, sve niže i sve kraće nad horizontom te je i sam priliv energije sve oskudniji. Utoliko je današnja vest značajnija jer uliva malo nade da će se Spirit izbaviti.

First, Spirit tries to back out the way she came, but she only sinks deeper in! D:!! The front-right wheel, dead for the past several years, springs back to life only momentarily to assist, then passes out again. Clearly, this is not working and will only secure Spirit's untimely demise. A new strategy is needed: she begins to swivel her left-front wheel, pushing sand out of the way, clearing a gap for her to move forward into. But it is quickly determined that this isn't working well. A new idea comes and Spirit is bathed in the enlightenment and cleverness, bestowed to her by her creators over and over again throughout her life. She reverses gear and guns it back the way she was coming, and rotates the wheels such that she actually rotates herself out of the evil pit of doom ;D ;D!!
This extraction effort is a work in progress! Will Spirit liberate herself from this evil doldrum? Or will its cold, dry, and unsympathetic sands drown her, and her happy Mars-roving days, into oblivion? Stay tuned.
